Empower Parents. Exposición en el Museo ICO

Madrid

Museo ICO. Calle Zorrilla, 3. Madrid

The exhibition Empower Parents displays a selection of works that were realized by a group of families affected by autism (TEA), who participate in the international project among Queens Museum (NY), ICO Museum and hablarenarte: (Madrid).

During one year, the families have simultaneously organized monthly workshops in both museums and have designed and planned the content and desired outcomes. Through this network on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean we have obtained new ways of working with this particular group in museums. And we have provided the parents with tools and resources that encourage the opening of museistic spaces towards all those who are affected by autism.

You can find the exhibition close to the stairway that leads to the workshop spaces of ICO Museum. It is here where we present the main axis of the project. The show includes the results of the workshops in Madrid, as for example the the Puppets that welcome the visitor, the Wall of Colours, the Vertical Garden or the Tree of Desires, the latter being realized in the christmas workshop. It also showcases some works realized in New York and the series Traveling Suitcases which was conceived by participants of both countries and within the "Mail Art" initiative.

Wishing to further disseminate the results of the project and to widen up the network towards other families, social groups, cultural institutions and museums, we have designed the platform www.empowerparents.net, written both in English and Spanish.
