España 1808-1814. La nación en armas. Guided tour program

Madrid

Teatro Fernán Gómez. Centro de Arte. Plaza de Colón, 4. Madrid

España 1808-1814. La nación en armas is one of the first events in the city of Madrid to commemorate the bicentenary of the War of Independence. Curated by Juan Francisco Fuentes, the exhibition illustrates the main military, political and social events that took place in Spain during the French invasion and the complexity of the historic process that turned the fight against invading forces into a deep rupture with the past. Consisting of more than two hundred items, the exhibition includes a broad selection of paintings, documents, engravings, clothing, artillery and utensils of military life and is complemented with screenings and audio-visual contents, including songs from the period.

The programme of guided visits organised by hablarenarte: reveals the main protagonists of the war – the opposing forces, the guerrillas and the women used as agents in the fight against the French – through a dual chronological and thematic itinerary. At the same time, the proposed route enables an understanding to be gained of the key concepts that resulted in the military and political outcome, and the role played by this event as a foundational legend and permanent "place of memory" in contemporary Spain.

People wishing to tour the exhibition on their own may obtain an educational guide in electronic format with the key features of the exhibition narrative.
