LÁZARO GALDIANO FOUNDATION
From May 9 to July 14 , 2008
Organized by the Sociedad Estatal de Conmemoraciones Culturales (State Society of Cultural Commemorations) working from the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation, the exhibition illustrates an evocating and fascinating approachment to the War of Independence through accounts and testimonies of people involved in the conflict,
showing intimate and straightforward realities of experiences during the war. These accounts and testimonies, along with more than half a hundred pieces such as manuscripts, medals, paintings, stamps, arms, fans, jewels, books and letters, show the complexity and diversity of society during the end of the 18 th century and beginning of the following.
The exhibition is structured around two unedited manuscripts, conserved by the Fundación Lázaro Galdiano and shown publicly for the first time. The first manuscript refers to the diary of the military engineer José María Román —his eventful experience as champion of Zaragoza in 1808, and his life as a prisoner for two Frenchmen in Spain and France until 1814. This experience has been mentioned in booklets, probably with the intention of a later publication, and thanks to which we can know details of military art, scenes of daily life, and descriptions of cities and buildings of the time .
The second manuscript is a text of records from that time period about the progress from the 18 th to 19 th centuries and the future of the events at the start of contemporary Spain . The document is well-preserved and carefully presented, for it is an original from a printing press and has been sent at the request of José Lázaro to be published it in the editorial La España Moderna.
The author, Ceferino Araujo , constructed the narration from the prints as the main source of information, and the authentic hangers that hold the fragile human memory, avoiding its fainting.
Splitting the manuscripts, the exhibition is divided into two main sections, both of which are included in the tour . The first is about experience, displaying testimonies from the time of the war; and at the second, about memory, the viewer recalls the conflict through those works that have contributed to its commemoration, keeping it alive.
