CONDE DUQUE CENTRE (Sala de Bóvedas)
From April 10 to May 31, 2008
Organized by the bank Satander and the Alberto Jiménez-Arellano Foundation, this exposition aims to teach about some traditional African coins and maintain their value in the history of money and monetary systems. It also serves to help us better understand the towns that use them; coins are a reflection of society, beliefs, culture, and economy, as well as the technical development of each.
The traditional African coin, as shown by the more than two hundred pieces of this collection, does not respond to Western norms; nevertheless, they have functioned just as have coins from any part of the world. The interesting aesthetic and refinement of their appearance made these coins into beautiful and desirable objects that were, over time, losing their initial functions.
The guided tours , approximately an hour long, will trace through the exposition with discourse about a selection of exhibited pieces. In addition, also for those who wish to see the exposition on their own, there are brief electronic didactic guides available so that you can further benefit from the tour.
