MAR: platform for cultural mediation and new institutionalism

Madrid. Reina Sofía Museum and Planta Alta art residencies

MAR is a platform promoted by Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina SofíaFundación Daniel y Nina Carasso and hablarenarte, which aims to promote relevant actions of change in contemporary cultural institutions, understanding cultural mediation as the backbone of these transformations.

MAR brings together the interests of three very different entities: a foundation, an association and a national museum. The platform aims to generate plural meeting spaces in which the great diversity of agents that make up the cultural mediation ecosystem in Spain can research, share and work together, through three interconnected work nodes:

  • programme of research residencies (Notar)
  • cultural mediation network (Alzar)
  • digital archive (Caja)

which, together, will contribute to blur the traditional boundaries between cultural institutions and civil society, understanding that cultural mediation can promote a paradigm shift that involves effectively all people in cultural life and in the public sphere. These nodes constitute a fluid structure where the continuous exchanges between them will generate a plural, dynamic and changing space of knowledge and experiences on cultural mediation and new contemporary institutionalities.

Notar is a residencies programme with the aim of stimulating and consolidating research on critical pedagogies, experimental mediation and alternative institutionalism, as well as the collective articulation of a forum or community where different initiatives can resonate, converge and amplify. Every year, six research residencies are carried out through an open call for applications.

Alzar is an informal network made up of cultural agents of all kinds (large and small cultural institutions, extitutions or independent collectives, freelance mediators...) interested in the intersection art+education and in cultural mediation as a lever of change in the current cultural model. Alzaraims to create and support an open, plural, diverse and committed community of agents that brings us together beyond our own respective comfort zones or known territories in order to meet, get to know each other, share knowledge, take care of each other and... raise our voices together. The debates, reflections and conclusions of the Alzar network will feed the digital archive Caja and will be presented publicly at different times throughout each year.

Caja consists of the generation of a living digital archive developed in dialogue with the Education Area and the Digital Library of Museo Reina Sofía and in collaboration with other cultural agents. Caja includes both previous experiences of art+education, cultural mediation and critical pedagogies, and the results of experimental practices promoted within MAR, originated in Notar and Alzar.

Caja is based on the need to pay attention to the historical problem of the absence of a record of methodologies and research processes in art+education, as well as of sharing this knowledge and experiences both in cultural institutions and in other types of institutions.

Caja will be configured by feeding, although not exclusively, from the crossroads of the following foci:

- External archive on critical pedagogies in artistic production, cultural mediation and society.

- Internal archive based on the processes, advances and results of Notar's research projects and the mediation network Alzar la voz juntos.
