Brisas de Oriente. El cartel comercial español. Guided tours program

Madrid

Casa Árabe. Calle Alcalá, 62. Madrid

The Madrid branch of Casa Árabe is hosting the exhibition “Brisas de Oriente. El cartel comercial español (1870-1970)”, showing nearly a hundred vintage commercial posters in which the attraction and fascination for the Arab orient are used as an advertising device. The posters displayed are a representative sample of one of the lesser known aspects of romantic orientalism applied to commercial advertising, in which our own Al-Andalus orient features prominently.

The exhibition includes original items dating from 1871 to 1964 showing viewers the aesthetics of this period through brands that are still household names today: beauty products, food, drinks, tourism in northern Africa, etc. In all of them, the orient is a land of fantasy to which we are swept away by advertising.

hablarenarte: is organising guided tours of the exhibition to get an in-depth view of facets such as the seductive appeal of the orient, the power of the advertising image and the historic relationship between Spain and the Arab world from a commercial perspective.
